Jack Clark, one of the founders of Anthropic, told the BBC on 15/09/2026 that an AI kill switch, one a third party can check, may need to be made mandatory. His point was that most labs already have some way to pull the plug, Anthropic included, but that society might want to pass rules about it rather than take anyone's word for it.
The piece lands in the middle of a very public argument. US lawmakers have a Kill Switch Act on the table. The UK government has said no, on the grounds that a switch would not stop the technology being built or misused elsewhere. The US President has called the whole worry a hoax. And people inside the industry are split too, with some saying the fear is overstated or is there to justify the valuations.
Our take
Here is why we care at Beyond™. The businesses we work with are putting AI into the day to day: the phones, the inbox, the ads, the reports. None of that needs a doomsday switch. All of it needs an off switch. Who can turn it off, how fast, and can you prove it happened. That is not a philosophical question, it is systems design, and it should be built in on day one, not bolted on after something goes sideways.
So when the people building the biggest models say they want to be checked, we take that as a good sign, not a scary one. Atlas has a kill switch on this very page. Go on, try it.
