Five rules I never break
If a message breaks one of these, it is a scam. Stop, and ring someone.
- 1
Never install an app because someone in a chat told you to
That includes Messenger, WhatsApp and Facebook invites, and links in texts. If an app is real, you can find it yourself in the App Store or Google Play.
- 2
Never read out a code
A code sent to your phone or email is the key to your account. No bank, courier or tax office ever needs it said aloud.
- 3
Never let anyone onto your computer or phone
No AnyDesk, TeamViewer or screen sharing, even if they say they are from the bank, Spark, One NZ or Microsoft.
- 4
Ring the bank on the number on the back of your card
If someone rings you about your money, hang up and ring the bank yourself. Never use a number from the call, text or email.
- 5
Ask family first
Anything with a deadline, a secret or a payment gets shown to family before you do a thing. A real company will wait an hour.
Who to ring
- Kyle:
- My bank: the number on the back of my card
- Police (not an emergency): 105. In an emergency: 111.
Already sent money or a code? Ring the bank first, straight away. Then ring Kyle. You will not be in trouble.
